Becontree villas get the green light
September 2019

Our project for Barking and Dagenham Council’s new regeneration company Be First has received planning permission. We are so pleased to see 19 affordable homes get the go-ahead on the Becontree Estate, which itself represents a hugely important period in the history of London’s council housing.

We have proposed two large suburban villas rather than a single monolithic block. This breaks down the impact on the surroundings and creates a carpet of greenery through the site. The form and materials used to define the buildings picks up on key details across the estate and its Neo-Georgian architecture.

This project creates much-needed homes for London, while recognising and respecting the history of the local council housing. Our client, Pat Hayes, said it best:

“The construction of the Becontree Estate was a pivotal moment in the history of British social housing and this new development builds on the borough’s proud past by using 21stcentury designs and materials. It’s another example of Barking and Dagenham taking on the historical challenge of building high quality affordable housing for working people.”
